How does the post-secondary program at PELICAN work?

Classification by level

Before starting your studies, you will take an entrance test and a short oral interview, based on which we will place you in a group corresponding to your language level. We make sure that lessons take place in classes of a similar level – simply put, "peers with peers." Groups usually have around 15 students, and we open several classes of different language levels every year.

Intensive teaching

Classes are held 20 hours per week, i.e. 4 lessons every weekday. Classes are held in the morning (8:00–11:15), at noon (11:30–14:45), or in the afternoon (15:00–18:15).
Over the course of the school year, you will complete approximately 750 hours of instruction in your preferred language. This is truly an intensive program that delivers measurable results – you can improve your Spanish by 1 to 2 language levels over the course of a year.

High-quality teachers and professional supervision

Both qualified Czech teachers and native speakers are involved in teaching. The course and quality of post-secondary studies are supervised by a methodologist, who ensures a consistent level of teaching and its long-term high quality.

Preparation for international exams

During your studies, we will prepare you specifically for international language exams or state language exams.
The certificate you obtain can significantly increase your chances not only in the university admission process, but also when looking for a job.

Study materials without worries

We will provide study materials for students. Some of them will be provided free of charge, while others can be purchased at a discount at the school office or at the textbook bazaar. During the school year, you will usually only need one or two textbooks.

Not just English and Spanish

Spanish isn't the only language we offer. When you study with us, you'll receive a 40% discount on any afternoon or evening group course open to the public, allowing you to study more than 10 world languages.

Flexible study conditions

Register early and save up to CZK 5,000 on course fees. We also offer the option of paying for post-secondary studies in two convenient installments. If you are accepted to a university or college and provide proof of enrollment, we will refund your course fees in full.

Studying for everyone

Post-secondary education is not just for recent high school graduates. Every year, we also have students without a high school diploma and graduates who graduated a long time ago (without student status). Post-secondary studies at the PELICAN language school are simply open to anyone who wants to advance and work on their language skills.

Life outside the classroom

Studying with us is not just about lessons. During the school year, you can also look forward to events, projects, and fun outside the classroom, which will help you use the language naturally and confidently in real-life situations.

Post-secondary education FAQs

What is student status, and am I entitled to it as a PELICAN student?

Student status entitles you to state social support, health insurance, tax relief, and other benefits. Every student who enrolls in post-secondary education in the school year immediately following their high school graduation exam is entitled to this status. However, if you graduated more than a year ago (e.g., you have already completed a year at university), then unfortunately you are no longer legally entitled to student status.

I want to enroll in post-secondary education. What do I need to do?

If you want to enroll in a post-secondary course, you must first fill out a binding application form and pay the tuition fee. You can fill out the application form online on our website or in person at the school office. Tuition fees must be paid no later than three days before the start of the post-secondary course, and the amount is based on the current price list published on the school’s website.

Is it possible to pay tuition fees in installments?

Yes, tuition fees can be divided into two installments. The first installment must be paid no later than three days before the start of the post-secondary course, and the second by the end of the calendar year. Please note that first-minute discounts cannot be used when paying in installments!

I would like to register for only half a year. Is that possible?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. This is a one-year post-secondary course that must be completed and paid for in full. This means that even if you decide to split the tuition into two payments, you are still required to pay both, even if you decide not to continue the course in the second semester for any reason.

Is attendance compulsory in post-secondary courses?

Yes, just like in high school, attendance is mandatory in post-secondary courses. The maximum allowed absence rate is 25%. If your absence rate exceeds this limit, we are entitled to expel you from the course without any refund of the course fee.

Are study materials included in the course price?

Some are, others are not. Students purchase textbooks at their own expense. However, we provide textbooks to our students at significant discounts.

Some of the materials are provided to students free of charge, and a textbook bazaar is usually held in consultation with students from the previous school year.

Can I choose the time of the classes?

Yes and no. Although we offer you the opportunity to tell us your preferred lesson time, we are not obliged to accommodate this request. Although we do our best to accommodate your schedule, it is never possible to accommodate everyone.

The composition of individual groups must be adapted primarily to the level of the students and the capacity of the classrooms; the personal preferences of students are taken into account only as a last resort. Assignment to a group with lessons at your preferred time is therefore not guaranteed, and dissatisfaction with the lesson time is not a reason for a refund of the course fee.

How is post-secondary education completed?

Completing post-secondary studies with an exam is not mandatory. We will issue you a certificate of completion “just” for completing the course. However, if you want to test your knowledge, you have several options: you can take a state language exam or an internal exam at the selected level at our school. If you are interested, we can also prepare you for international exams (Cambridge, DELE, Goethe), for which we register students en masse. However, none of these exams are included in the course price.

I enrolled in post-secondary studies and paid the tuition fees, but unfortunately I found out that I will not be able to start studying. Will my tuition fees be refunded?

It depends on the reason why you are not enrolling in the course. According to the school regulations, you are entitled to a full refund of the course fee only if you are not enrolling in the course for serious health reasons (upon providing a doctor’s note) or because you have been accepted to a university (upon providing proof of acceptance). If your reasons are different (e.g., moving, work commitments, etc.), you are not entitled to a refund of tuition fees.

I enrolled in post-secondary studies, but unfortunately I am not satisfied with the teaching. Am I entitled to cancel my application and get a refund?

Unfortunately, dissatisfaction with teaching is not a reason for termination of studies and refund of tuition fees according to school regulations. If you have any reservations about the management or timing of lessons, or about the approach of a teacher, please discuss the situation directly with us at the school office. We will do our utmost to resolve your dissatisfaction and ensure that you are happy with the lessons.

Can I enroll in post-secondary studies even though I come from Slovakia?

Yes, students from Slovakia can use their student status in Czechia. In order to retain their student status, students must enroll in post-secondary education by the end of the calendar year following their first high school graduation exam. If you are interested in learning more, read our article!

I heard that if I take a post-secondary course at the PELICAN language school, I will also get a second language course for free. How does that work?

Unfortunately, we no longer offer this benefit to post-secondary students due to declining attendance at our subsidized courses. However, if you want to learn another language, we are happy to support your enthusiasm! As a post-secondary student, we offer you a 40% discount on any public course in the afternoon or evening.
